How do braces actually move teeth?

Braces deliver light, continuous forces through brackets and shape-memory wires. They stimulate the ligament around each tooth, creating space on one side while bone fills in on the other. The result is a slow, safe remodelling of bone rather than "pushing" teeth.

Bone remodelling response during braces Bracket forces and bone changes shown around a stylised tooth with an archwire.

1. Smart bonding

Brackets are positioned with digital guides so the wire sits exactly where your orthodontist wants the tooth to finish.

2. Nickel-titanium memory wires

Heat-activated wires want to return to a programmed shape, applying gentle forces even when teeth are crowded.

3. Biological response

Cells remove bone in the pressure area and deposit bone where the tooth is moving, keeping roots healthy.

4. Finishing & detailing

Stainless-steel wires fine tune bite, smile arc and midline with elastics, springs and finishing bends.

What you will feel

Expect gentle tightness for 2–3 days after an adjustment and then a sensation of teeth feeling slightly loose — that is bone remodelling in action.

  • Days 1–3: soft diet, OTC pain relief if required.
  • Days 4–21: teeth feel normal; focus on hygiene and elastic wear.
  • Any sharpness? Cover with wax and ping us on WhatsApp.

Monthly review routine

Every visit is mapped to the digital simulation so we only tighten when tissues are ready and you always know the next milestone.

  • Progress photos and iTero scan overlays.
  • Archwire change or elastic reconfiguration.
  • Quick polish + fluoride gel to keep enamel strong.

Why choose braces instead of clear aligners?

  • They excel at complex skeletal discrepancies needing elastics, bite turbos or growth modulation.
  • Braces stay active 24/7, so compliance is not a worry for younger teens.
  • They allow 3D control of tooth roots for rotation, torque and vertical correction.
  • Treatment cost is typically lower and repairs are simpler if an attachment breaks.

Limitations of clear aligners

  • Require 20–22 hours/day wear — lost trays can set progress back by weeks.
  • Less predictable for severe rotations, open bites or impacted teeth.
  • Attachments may be visible and needs interproximal polishing.
  • Complex cases demand elastic wear plus braces finishing later.

Deep bite with crowding

Braces: Torque control and bite turbos open the bite while roots are positioned upright.

Aligners struggle when: Severe rotations need attachments on almost every tooth and mid-course refinements prolong wear.

Impacted canine or missing teeth

Braces: Hooks, chains and TADs (mini-screws) guide buried teeth into position with precision.

Aligners struggle when: Space opening and traction forces exceed tray flexibility leading to stalled movement.

Growth modulation

Braces: Pair seamlessly with functional appliances to harness remaining jaw growth.

Aligners struggle when: Limited ability to couple with orthopedic devices or deliver 24/7 mandibular guidance.

Who can start braces at Noble Dental Care?

Orthodontics isn't just for teenagers. We customise protocols for growing kids, young professionals and adults seeking bite rehabilitation.

Age 7–11 · Interceptive phase

Early screening lets us guide jaw growth, expand arches and make room for permanent teeth — best time to guide habits and breathing.

Age 12–17 · Growth spurt advantage

The pubertal growth spurt is ideal to correct skeletal imbalances with functional appliances, reducing need for future surgery.

18+ · Adult orthodontics

We coordinate periodontal care, restorative dentistry and braces to align teeth safely at any age with CBCT planning.

Ideal candidates

  • Healthy gums and supporting bone
  • Willing to attend monthly adjustments
  • Motivated to follow oral hygiene & diet guidance
  • Growth potential (for skeletally-driven cases)
  • No upper age limit if periodontal status is stable

Who should wait?

  • Active tooth decay or gum infection — needs stabilisation first
  • Untreated jaw fractures or severe bone loss
  • Medications affecting bone metabolism (consult physician)
  • Pregnancy first trimester — we plan, then begin after clearance
  • Acute TMJ pain or clenching — manage symptoms before starting

Contra-indications

  • Recent jaw or facial fractures
  • Uncontrolled diabetes or bleeding disorders
  • Severe periodontal disease with mobility
  • Allergy to nickel without alternative bracket options
  • Poor oral hygiene compliance despite coaching

Pre-braces readiness checklist

  • Complete fillings or extractions recommended by your dentist.
  • Schedule a professional cleaning and polish.
  • Share medical history, medications and recent reports.

Lifestyle adjustments

  • Switch to a soft-bristled brush and fluoride paste.
  • Collect orthodontic wax, interdental brushes and a travel kit.
  • Discuss school, travel or wedding timelines so we pace treatment right.

Understanding malocclusions in friendly language

We categorise issues by the bones (skeletal) and the teeth (dental). Tap each to jump into a simple explanation.

Skeletal Class II (upper jaw ahead)

Your upper jaw has grown a little ahead or the lower jaw is set back. During growth we use twin-blocks or Herbst devices with braces to nudge the jaw forward. Adults can pair braces with jaw advancement surgery.

Skeletal Class III (underbite)

The lower jaw is ahead of the upper jaw. Early facemask therapy during growth helps pull the upper jaw forward. Adults may need surgical orthodontics with braces to align the bite.

Dental crowding

Teeth jostle for space because the arch is narrow. We expand arches, strip tiny enamel widths or remove teeth only if necessary to align them neatly.

Spacing & diastema

Gaps between teeth from small tooth size or missing teeth. Braces close spaces and coordinate with implants or bonding to fill the smile evenly.

Open bite

Front teeth do not touch. We identify tongue posture or breathing concerns, then use braces with elastics, mini screws or aligners to bring the bite together.

Crossbite

One or more upper teeth bite inside lower teeth. Early expansion or cross-elastics prevent uneven jaw growth. Back to malocclusion list.

Skeletal problems relate to the jaw bones and often need growth guidance or surgical support, while dental problems focus on tooth positioning. Most smiles are a mix, so we explain the recipe for your case with visuals before bonding.

Investigations, mock analysis & treatment simulations

Digital diagnostics remove guesswork. We map teeth, jaw joints, airway and smile dynamics before the first bracket is bonded.

1 · Records & scans

Full mouth X-rays, cephalograms, intra-oral photos and iTero 3D scans build your baseline dataset.

2 · Mock analysis

We simulate tooth movement digitally, evaluate airway and TMJ harmony, and test expansion vs extraction plans.

3 · Treatment planning

Orthodontist + restorative dentist align goals. You review options, expected timelines and see a video walk-through.

4 · 3D simulations

Animated overlays show how teeth, lips and profile evolve. We print mock-ups when expansion or jaw surgery is planned.

Our digital tool stack

  • CBCT fusion with intra-oral scans to visualise roots and airway.
  • AI-assisted cephalometric tracing to forecast growth vectors.
  • Smile simulation videos so you preview the finish before we start.
  • Cloud-based tracking that lets you review progress dashboards at home.

Required investigations before bonding

  • CBCT / OPG to assess roots, bone and wisdom teeth
  • Cephalometric tracing for growth vectors
  • Medical clearance when systemic conditions exist
  • Oral hygiene & periodontal evaluation
  • Digital mock-up and measurement worksheet

We share a written plan summarising objectives, expected visits and retainer strategy so families can make confident decisions before we place the first bracket.
